Namaste Friends of the Raj
This week’s blog has to give reference to a very sacred day celebrated all around the world by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Newar Buddhists.
For each of these religions marks a special meaning of Diwali but the intrinsic connection to all, the belief that good will supersede evil, knowledge will supersede ignorance and the ultimate being light superseding darkness.
The legendary story behind Diwali stems from when King Dasharatha exiled his son and his family for 14 years.
Rama was to become the heir to the King’s throne, however his wife Kaikeyi convinced him to appoint another son, Bharata, to this prestigious position. Kaikeyi explains to her husband that misfortune will come upon her if he doesn’t crown Bharata King.
For 14 years Bharata ruled Ayodhya in an evil manner, causing lots of hardship to the people of the community.
Once the 14 years of exile was concluded, Rama and his wife Sita decided to travel back home to Ayodhya by foot. Feeling sorry for the couple, people in the villages would leave lights in their doorways to help them find their way in the dark. These lights are a symbol of light overcoming darkness.
Rama and Sita successfully enters Ayodhya to become King and Queen and to make this kingdom a shining light, after the darkness of Bharata’s reign.
Friends, I would like to wish all patrons of The Raj Restaurant Group a Shubh Diwali. This being one of the most popular greetings in India.
For those who are not familiar with this celebration, I trust that you enjoyed reading the history of the legend of Diwali. May you too celebrate light over darkness and find joy, happiness and prosperity.
We look forward to hosting your family at The Raj this Diwali, for an authentic Indian cooked meal.
