Authentically… North Indian!
Namaste Friends of The Raj
Today’s blog has to give praise to a very special vegetable curry known as Navratan Korma. Not many guests have tasted this subtle but delicious curry, however once they have, it becomes a firm regular to order at our restaurant.
Navratan Korma is a mild coconut flavoured curry, with a base made from cream or yoghurt, with additions of luxurious cashew nut paste, mixed vegetables and soft fruits.
This North Indian curry dates back to the 16th century, where it was served by the Mughal court kitchen. Mr Ahmed Ali is said to have invented this flavoursome delight.
It is believed that Navratan Korma is named after the 9 Courtiers of King Akbar of the Mughal Dynasty. ‘Nav’ translates to 9 and ‘ratan’ translates to jewel thus this curry was described as a curry fit for royalty.
The dish is prepared in 4 different cooking styles throughout India, namely Shahi, Mughlai, Hyderabadi and Kashmiri. The Raj serves a Kashmiri style korma.
Friends, whether you in the mood for a spicy or tenderly sweet curry, we have a taste for everyone. Although this dish is served with complimentary basmati rice, we recommend a luscious butter naan to accompany the meal.
